IN
RETROSPECT (1937 Sound) A sound film made in 1937 looking back at 10 years of the films produced by the Morris Film Unit from its formation in 1927. A fascinating introduction to many unique films in the Morris Film Library. (18 minutes) BRITAIN'S FOREMOST MOTOR CAR FACTORY (1924 Silent) The earliest known silent film on the manufacture and assembly of cars at Cowley. This film seems to pre-date the formation of the Morris Film Unit by about three years. The historian of the Morris Register, Harry Edwards, working from chassis numbers seen on the export packing crates, has dated the production to March 1924. (27 minutes) SHOOTING A FAMOUS WORKS (1927 Silent) An extraordinary silent film of a film crew making a film of the production of Morris cars. We see the crew being welcomed at Oxford Station and then being taken around the Cowley Factory. The implication in the film "In Retrospect" is that it is a 1927 production, but again some of the material seems to date from 1924. There is the earliest known footage of "Mr Morris" seen driving one of his cars and fascinating shots of running chassis' being tested in the surrounding countryside. (12 minutes) |

AT COWLEY
(1932 Sound) A classic period production. A father (Miles Thomas!) returns home to tell his family of his guided tour of the Morris Works at Cowley. Beautifully photographed and detailed look at every aspect of production. (18 minutes 30 seconds) MARVELS OF MODERN MACHINERY (1932 Sound) A film showing the Morris engines being produced at the Coventy factory. The emphasis is on the use of very high precision production techniques. (20 minutes) MORRIS GAZETTE (1933 Sound) News and views of Morris activities in short "newsreel" like stories along the lines of the famous Pathe Gazette. Titles include "Sahara Conquered", "Varsity Eight and Morris Six" and "Thrills in the Air and Funds for the Sick". (15 minutes) QUALITY Whilst the majority of these films have been mastered on to video using original, restored 35mm prints or negatives, some have had to be stored and reconstructed using whatever 35mm or 16mm components could be traced. The quality of the picture and sound in these cases is somewhat variable. |

THE ONE
HUNDRED POUND CAR IS HERE (1930/1 Silent) A short silent film on the important new Morris Minor. It is shown being put through its paces by a couple as well as aspects of its design and manufacture. (4 minutes 30 seconds) SPEED (1932/2 Sound) One of the earliest uses of sound in Morris films, it shows the special bodied Morris Minor that achieved 100 miles in the hour at Brooklands in August 1931. The car was then "de-tune" to allow it to do 100 miles per gallon on the road. (6 minutes) THE MORRIS SOUND GAZETTE (1932 Sound) The first of the Morris Gazettes which were intended to be short "newsreel" like stories, rather on the lines of the famous Pathe Gazette. Titles include "Official R.A.C. Petrol Consumption Tests", "Motors and Music" and "Motoring on Water". (15 minutes) THE CAR THAT PUT BRITAIN ON WHEELS (1932 Sound) What is described as a "Holiday Trip" through the West Country showing the capabilities of the Cowley 11-9hp Saloon. (15 minutes) MORRIS BEHIND THE SCENES (1931/2 Sound) The manufacture of radiators at Morris Radiators in Oxford. |

THE NEW
MORRIS EIGHT (1934) A splendid production to launch the new small car that was to reverse the failing fortunes of the Morris Company. Borrowing heavily from the Ford Y (8 H.P) the Morris Eight, with its sturdy 918.6cc engine was to prove enormously popular and sold over 200,000 units in the four years of its production. This beautifully photographed film shows all aspects of its design, development and production. (11 minutes 30 seconds) SPECIALISATION (1935) Specialisation was the name given to the Morris Company's answer to American mass production that was master-minded by the brilliant, and much-feared, Leonard Lord. One of the first cars to benefit from the much-improved production facilities at the Cowley Factory was the Morris Eight. The film shows how the specialist Morris Factories in Coventry and Oxford produce the engines, bodies and radiators, and how the cars are finally assembled at Cowley. It ends with a review of the entire Morris range for 1935. (15 minutes) THE PYRENEES (1938) A travelogue set in the French Pyrenees featuring the new Series "E" Morris Eight. An extremely rare colour film made using the short-lived, but remarkably effective, Dufaycolour process, a very adventurous and expensive experiment for the 'in house' Morris Film Unit. (20 minutes) NB: The sound has suffered in places partly because of the process itself, but mainly because of the age of this unique print. |

DUSTY MILES
(1949) A film made to promote the new Morris Minor in the all important post War North American market. The 1,500 mile Alaska Highway had been completed in 1942 connecting Dawson Creek, Alberta to Fairbanks, Alaska. This largely unsurfaced road over the Rockies and through wild and remote country was seen by the Nuffield Organisation as the perfect backdrop to demonstrate the quality and reliability of their new small car. Two left hand drive Minors were used, a saloon and a drop head coupe. Duration 32 minutes 39 seconds 10,000 MILES NON-STOP (1952) Unique record of an extraordinary publicity stunt at the Goodwood motor circuit using a four-door Morris Minor Series 11 saloon and the extraordinary Nuffield Organisation research tender. This articulated vehicle, based on a modified Morris half-ton van chassis, had a bizarre trailer in the shape of a tuning fork that enabled engineers to service the Minor whilst still driving under its own power. Four thousand laps round the Goodwood Circuit in ten days were successfully completed. (4 minutes 40 seconds) MINOR 1000 IN LONDON (1956) A travelogue set in the wonderfully traffic free London of 1956 to promote the virtues of the new Morris Minor 1000. (2 minutes 17 seconds) TESTS SUCH AS THESE (1956) 25,000 miles at an average speed of 60 miles per hour. A BMC production to publicise the new range of BMC by showing how they perform on an endurance run on German autobahns. The prototype Morris 1000 is shown in company with its sister BMC cars, the Morris Oxford, the Austin A50 and the A35. (9 minutes 12 seconds) |
